Due to its great taste, ‘Malali’ watermelon was known as the best watermelon in the Israeli market, and was the most common variety in Israel during the 1950’s, replacing the local “Baladi” varieties. It is known that the Malali watermelon was chosen in a commercial farming area of “Kfar Malal”, by Mordechai Silberg and Baruch Burstein in 1940. The watermelon was formed as a result of accidental cross pollination between the local variety ׳Mahasni׳ and 'Chilean Black' watermelon.
Israeli heirloom dark green color variety. Crunchy texture that is sweet and flavorful. The name is due to the shape of a Star of David that appears when slicing the okra. We have been asked to start the selection and growing of Black Beauty eggplant. At the end of the season I sent the seeds to agricultural center in Hadera, to continue cultivation work”.
Ananas Yoqne’am was first cultivated by Natan Rabinovich, a Romanian-born resident of Yokneam, Israel. Rabinobivh had formal agricultural training in France. Rabinovich began producing melons commercially from his new breed around 1950 and do to its great taste quickly became the best melon in the market. Ananas Yoqne’am was cultivated from the traditional landrace melon that was grown locally at that time. Breed to be grown on dryland without irrigation.Seeds should be sown in early spring strive on residual moisture in the ground left from winter rains. Due to the excellent properties Ananas Yoqne’am melon is extensively used as sources of germplasm for the international Cucurbit manufacturing industry.
'Ein Dor' combination of pineapple with a hint of banana flavor. The fruit turns yellow under its coarse netting as it matures and sets at 1-2 kg melon. This Holy Land heirloom melon was selected and cultivated by local resident David Solomon, one of the founders of Kibbutz Ein Dor in the Lower Galilee. 'Ein Dor' has a sweet cavity, slow to mature, but well worth the wait. David Solomon worked in agriculture, with much of his work focused on cultivating new varieties of melons, watermelons, sesame, wheat and more. He received many awards for his work and had close ties with Tel Aviv University and research institutes around the world .
One of our favorite varieties a perfect combination of taste and texture made this melon to be one of the most beloved melons in the world. This melon was breed in kibbutz “Ha’ogen”, founded in 1939 by immigrants from Czechoslovakia. Thought to have originated in Hungary, but there is no conclusive proof of this. Apart of its delicious flavor the name of this cucumber “Shmshon” was given do to its unusual strength an Israeli heritage breed from 1965. (“Samson The Hero” a judge of the ancient Israelites mentioned in the Hebrew Bible Book of Judges chapters 13 to 16).
Bred by the late Ezra Gallon professor at Weizmann Institute. Gallon studied the physiological and genetic control of sex determination in cucumber plants, his research led to the development of new varieties of cucumbers, some of them are grown up to this day. Fruit size varies between 12-15 cm when it is ready to harvest.
Landrace Faqqous-Doya variety, an ancient biblical cucumber, has been grown in the Holy Land for many generations. Pearl white color with fine hair on very thin skin. Faggous-Doya has no bitterness and the fruit is almost always used without peeling. Harvest once fruit reaches 15-20 cm size. Faqqous-Doya is a snake melon (cucumis melo Flexuosus). Modern cucumber was brought to Israel more recently via Egypt and India. Egyptians are known to have been harvesting Fakos throw the Bronze Age. Today Fakos is cultivated in all countries of the Middle East and around the Mediterranean.
