Israeli Heirloom Eggplant – A Resilient and Productive Variety
An exceptional Israeli heirloom eggplant, renowned for its resilience to hot weather and adaptability to various growing conditions. This hardy plant thrives in almost any climate, making it a reliable choice for farmers and home gardeners alike. It produces stunning deep purple fruits, each weighing around 5 pounds, with an abundant yield of dozens of fruits per plant. In addition to its impressive productivity, the plant boasts beautiful blooms that are especially attractive to bees, enhancing pollination in the garden.
The history of this variety is rooted in early Israeli agricultural research. Hanka Lazarson, a resident of Beit Alfa, documented its development:
"At the beginning of April 1937, an Agricultural Research delegation led by Dr. S. Horowitz arrived. We were asked to begin the selection and cultivation of the ‘Black Beauty’ eggplant. At the end of the season, I sent the seeds to the agricultural center in Hadera to continue the cultivation work."
This heirloom eggplant remains a testament to the region's agricultural heritage, offering a robust, heat-tolerant, and highly productive option for growers.
